From 1950 to 1979 Bingham worked two full-time jobs – at MI5 by day (and frequently by night when clandestine operations such as break-ins were required) and as a novelist in the evenings. On 27 April 1951 the first step towards his second career was taken by his literary agent, Peter Watt of A. P. Watt & Co., in a letter to the redoubtable Victor Gollancz, head of the publishing firm famous for its yellow-jacketed crime list. The letter neatly gives a brief summary of the book’s plot and of the somewhat haphazard manner in which it was written.

Dear V. G.

I am sending you a first novel by John Bingham called ‘MY NAME IS MICHAEL SIBLEY’ which I have much enjoyed reading myself. It is a story of what could happen to an unheroic, indeed rather weak young man and a girl who is no stronger when they come up against the police in a murder investigation. Its great merit lies in the fact that the story could happen to quite ordinary people in real life.

Please disregard as far as you can the state of the manuscript. Mr. Bingham who is a journalist has typed it all at odd times and in odd corners and then as a result of some criticism of a friend of his he rewrote much of it without retyping it all. The impression that the book has been widely shown is an erroneous one.

Yours very sincerely.

Peter
